The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team played two-men down for a majority in Friday’s Mid-American Conference semifinal match against top-seeded Northern Illinois, falling in the end by a count of 3-0. Senior Sola Abolaji (Denver, Colorado) and sophomore Dan Gwyther (London, England/Woodcote) received two yellow cards by the 54th minute, causing the Bulls to play with only nine for the remainder of the game. The Bulls held strong, despite being down by one goal heading into the 80th minute, when exhaustion took over. The Huskies managed to score two goals to put the Bulls’ season away.
UB triumphed in its MAC quarterfinal contest against IPFW on Halloween 3-0 and cruised to its tenth win of the season. The UB offense led the way with an offensive assault that resulted in a season-high 18 shots on goal on 32 total shots. Seniors Braden Byler (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) and Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) converted on the game’s first and last goals, while freshman Steffen Thoresen (Trondheim, Norway/Kristen Videregaaende Tronderlag) scored his first collegiate goal on a header. The Bulls have never lost to IPFW in four all-time meetings, shutting out their MAC adversaries, 9-0.
After Northern Illinois defeated Akron in Sunday’s MAC Championship game 1-0, the conference announced its All-MAC First and Second Teams as well as the All-MAC Tournament Team. Seniors Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) and Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) were awarded with first-team honors, and junior Dan Stevens (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), senior Brian Knapp, and sophomore Dan Gwyther rounded out the second team. Both Clarke and Stevens were named to the All-MAC Tournament team for their stellar play in the three-game tournament. Bell And Balkanloo Named To CoSIDA Academic Teams
