Team-Record Five Bulls Named To All-MAC Teams
It is the first time in team history that the conference honored two Bulls on the first-team as well as the first time that a total of five UB members were named to both the first and second-teams. Clarke and Stevens were also named to the MAC All-Tournament team. At the conclusion of each season, the MAC honors those who have led their team game after game with outstanding talent and clutch performances. Northern Illinois, the MAC regular season co-champ and MAC Tournament Champions this year, earned two of the top three awards of the year. Akron midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic won Player of the Year honors, finishing second in the conference in shots (50), points (18), and assists (6). He also ranks fourth in goals (4). NIU forward Marcus McCarty won newcomer of the year, as he led the MAC in points (22), points per game (1.22) goals (9) goals per game (0.50), and game-winning goals (6). Coach of the Year honors also went to NIU coach Steve Simmons, who earned a share of the MAC regular season title with an overall record of 13-5-1.
Clarke led the Bulls with eight goals and 19 points. The eight goals is second best in the MAC and is one shy of the Kingston, Jamaica native's career high, which he set last season. Clarke is the third player in UB history to lead the team in both goals and points in three seasons, Ediru Okpewho being the first to do so in 1993, '94, and '96 and Steve Butcher being the second in three straight years from '97-'99. The graduating senior ends his UB campaign as one of the best to ever grace a UB uniform, as he sits fifth in goals with 22, second in assists with 17 and third in points with 62 total. Bell earned his first-ever first-team All-MAC honor after being named to the second team last season. His 60 saves made on the year was a personal season-best, and was second in the MAC. A .822 save percentage earned him a top 30 ranking in the nation. Bell is the first Bull goalkeeper ever to have posted below a 1.00 goals against average in second consecutive years. In four years as a Bull, the senior keeper is the all-time winningest goalkeeper, posting a school-best 33 wins and a school-best 0.89 GAA over a four-year span.
With seven assists on the season, Stevens led the MAC in his first season in a Bull uniform. It was also a feat that tied him for seventh on the school's all-time list for a single season. Stevens was instrumental in a stretch of four games in which he had recorded at least one assist, three of those games generating in wins. Knapp tied a career-high in goals with four this season, following up a junior campaign in which he had record career-highs in every offensive category. Knapp was in the top five in the MAC in assists with five, and one of six players to play in all 19 games this season. After being named West Virginia Shootout MVP in the second game of the season, Gwyther made a ferocious defensive stand in the UB backfield, generating eight shutouts. It is his first MAC honor in his two-years thus far as a Bull. The Bulls finished the 2006 season at 10-7-2. 2006 Player of the Year Sinisa Ubiparipovic, Akron 2006 Newcomer of the Year Marcus McCarty, Northern Illinois 2006 Gary V.
