Men's Soccer Weekly ReleaseUB Falls to Bowling Green Buffalo fell 1-0 to Bowling Green in the semifinal round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament held at the University at Buffalo. The Falcons scored off a corner kick in the third minute of the game to take an early lead, and then relied on a strong defense to hold the Bulls scoreless the rest of the game. The loss ended Buffalo's season with a final record of 6-10-2 while Bowling Green advanced to the championship game.
Bulls Defeat Third-Seeded Akron 2-1 Entering the MAC Tournament as the six seed, the Buffalo Bulls upset third-seeded Akron 2-1 in the quarterfinal round behind the scoring of senior Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). After a scoreless game in the first half, Songer broke free in the second half and gave UB a 1-0 lead in the 72nd minute. Akron would respond five minutes later with a goal to tie the game at 1-1. Just when it appeared the game would head to overtime, Songer came through again, scoring on another breakaway with less than two minutes remaining to secure the 2-1 victory.
McCallion Named All-MAC First Team UB senior midfielder Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team as voted on by MAC coaches. McCallion was named to the All-MAC Second Team the previous two seasons and was named an all-conference selection as a freshman in the Mid-Con. This season, McCallion was the second-leading scorer on the team, scoring four goals and recording two assists for 10 points.
Record Watch Senior Brian McCallion finished his career with 17 assists, good for second place in the UB record books. He also finished with 16 career goals, good for 11th place on the career list and finished in seventh in career points with 49. McCallion wasn't the only Bulls' player to move up in the record books this season. Tim Songer was UB's leading scorer this season with six goals and 15 points, moving him up the career charts as well. Songer ranks fifth in career goals with 21, fourth in career assists with 16 and fourth in career points with 58. In addition, senior John Shannon (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) finished with 13 career assists, which ranks him in sixth place on the career list.
Wozniak in NCAA Rankings Buffalo goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) is currently ranked eighth in the NCAA for most saves in a game this season. Wozniak recorded 14 saves in a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut on September 3. The most saves in a game this year is 19 by two separate players. Wozniak also recorded 11 saves in a 3-0 loss at Wright State.
UB Opponents Record Seven Shutouts The Bulls' offense ran up against some top quality defensive units this season as UB was shut out a total of seven times by its opponent. UB was shut out in four of its six conference games and in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament. The Bulls had a string of three-straight games without a goal midway through the season and had back-to-back shutout games late in the year.
