Bulls Drop Final Conference Match to Hartwick, 2-1
Justin Fredsell scores his first career goal in the loss
Justin Fredsell | BUFFALO, NY – Despite taking an early lead, the University at Buffalo men's soccer team lost their final Mid-American Conference match 2-1 to Hartwick. Justin Fredsell (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) opened the scoring in the 10th minute but the Hawks battled back to earn the road win.
Buffalo (9-5-2) jumped out to an early lead when Dan Bulley (Exeter, England/St. Peter's) set up Fredsell who calmly slotted the ball past Hartwick goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo to open the scoring 9:43 into the contest. Hartwick (5-4-6) evened the match in the 40th minute when Austin McCann beat UB goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontartio/Notre Dame Secondary) to the ball and scored from a tight angle. Jimmy Eichas (Rochester, NY/Hilton) nearly gave the Bulls the lead less than two minutes later but he was denied by Vuolo.
Dan Bulley | Both teams came out strong to begin the second half as there were chances on both ends of the field. The best chance came for Fredsell in the 53rd minute, but again Vuolo was able to come up with the save. The Hawks took a lead in the 73rd minute when John Paul Boyle fired a shot past Bell to give Hartwick a 2-1 advantage. Once again the Bulls nearly answered immediately following a Hartwick goal as less than a minute later Bulley broke in on goal but his shot sailed inches wide. Despite pushing the play for the game's final 15 minutes, the Bulls were unable to find an equalizing goal.
The Bulls will play their final regular season match this Wednesday, November 7 at UB Stadium as they host cross-town rival Canisius on senior night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
