Buffalo Beats Akron in Men's Quarterfinals

Songer's Two Goals Leads Bulls to Win

BUFFALO, NY - UB senior Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) led the Bulls to a 2-1 win over third-seeded Akron in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament held at UB. Buffalo will move into the semifinals where they will face Bowling Green on Sunday.

The game was an evenly matched battle through the first half. Neither team could find the net as the two combined to take just five shots, with no shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play. The second half appeared to be going the same direction until Songer broke free from the Akron defense and had a one-on-one matchup with Zips' goalie Kyle Milligan. Songer made the most of the opportunity and netted the first goal of the game for a 1-0 UB lead at the 71:09 mark. The Zips would respond quickly as Akron's Matt Boswell knocked a header past UB goalie Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) to tie the score at 1-1 in the 77th minute.

With time winding down in the second half, it appeared to be headed to overtime before Songer struck again. Songer took advantage of a hole in the Akron defense and broke away for another head-to-head matchup with Milligan, and again Songer came through for the game-winning goal with under two minutes to play and secure the 2-1 Buffalo victory.

With the win, Buffalo improves to 6-9-2 on the season while Akron falls to 7-7-3. The Bulls move into the semifinals where they will face the number one seed Bowling Green Falcons on Sunday, November 5 at 2:30 pm, on the Bulls' home field.
