Marshall Defeats Western Michigan in Double Overtime in MAC Men's Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal

Thundering Herd advances to tomorrow's semifinals

BUFFALO, NY - The No. 2 Marshall Thundering Herd needed two overtime periods, but finally defeated the seventh-seeded Western Michigan Broncos, 2-1, in Mid-American Conference Men's Soccer Tournament quarterfinal action at the University at Buffalo.

Marshall got on the board first when sophomore David Spaulding (Villa Hills, KY/Dixie Heights) scored off a pass from sophomore Byron Carmichael (Luberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) at the 22:49 mark. Western Michigan would not trail for long, however, scoring less than two minutes later. Freshman Reese Richardson (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) scored off a pass from sophomore Mike Bravo (Lake Zurich, IL/Lake Zurich) at the 24:01 mark to even the score at 1-1. Neither team could get a decent scoring opportunity in the second half as both defenses held tough to force overtime. Both teams were aggressive offensively in the first 15 minute overtime period, but neither team could find the net. In the second overtime, Marshall broke away quickly and Carmichael, the MAC Player of the Year, scored off a pass from sophomore Dennis Ahebwa (Kampala, Uganda/Martin-Methodist) for the gamewinner at 107:21.

Marshall (14-4-1 overall) outshot Western Michigan (6-13-1 overall) by a 13-6 margin. The Thundering Herd advances to Sunday's semifinal round.
