UB Set To Claim Postseason Prominence

Third-seeded Bulls to host MAC Tournament game against IPFW

BUFFALO, NY– After finishing its regular season schedule on Oct. 23, the University at Buffalo men's soccer team has had time to sit and reflect back on a truly memorable season. After claiming a top 20 national ranking earlier in the year, the Bulls have gained notoriety and respect among their opponents to be considered one of the most talented and well-rounded teams in the nation, standing at a 12-3-1 regular season record.

However, by going 2-2-1 against Mid-American Conference opponents this season, the Bulls have claimed a third seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament behind nationally top-ranked Akron and recently-ranked Northern Illinois, according to the NSCAA/adidas national poll. On Monday, the third-seeded Bulls anxiously awaited word on who they would face in the first round, either Bowling Green or IPFW. After both teams matched up on Sunday, Bowling Green came away with a 2-1 win and, ultimately, a fifth seed in the tournament, which meant the first round was set, making way for a UB showdown against IPFW on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7 pm at UB Stadium.

IPFW (3-15-0, 0-4 MAC) joined the Mid-American Conference for men's soccer officially on Sept. 23, and has fallen to each MAC team except for Northern Illinois, who it plays on Nov. 2. In UB's earlier encounter with the Mastodons on Oct. 16, the Bulls were victorious in a 1-0 win on Senior Day. A goal in the opening two minutes by junior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) was the lone highlight in a game that featured very physical play and sloppy weather conditions.

This season, the Bulls are led by Clarke, who has established himself as a triple threat offensively with speed, field vision, and a cannon for a shot. With eight goals and 10 assists, Clarke leads the MAC in total assists and assists per game with 10 and 0.62, while his 26 points lands him third. Sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) leads the Bulls in goals with nine, currently fifth in the conference. Junior goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) has led the defensive charge, pitching seven shutouts and allowing 0.78 goals per game.

IPFW is led by Victor Webb and Chas Perry with five goals apiece. In the game against UB, both players managed only two shots. The team has been outscored by its opponents 60-23 and leads the MAC in saves with 106.

The first-round MAC Tournament matchup begins at 7 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at UB Stadium. Tickets for the game are $4 for the general public, $2 for students, and go on sale starting at 6 pm.
