The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team made a valiant effort Saturday afternoon against Akron in its quest to seize a share of its first Mid-American Conference regular-season title, but could not come back after falling behind 2-0 in the first six minutes of the match. The game, originally scheduled to be played Friday but was postponed due to poor weather conditions, ended in a 2-1 Akron win and earned the Zips a share of the regular-season title along with Northern Illinois. Senior Sola Abolaji (Denver, Colorado/Eagle Crest) scored the lone goal with 17 minutes remaining in the match. The Zips held control for most of the game, winning the corner kick battle 9-1 and making the most of its chances to keep the lead.
For his heroic efforts against then nationally 19th-ranked Northern Illinois two weeks ago, senior forward Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week and took weekly honors being named onto Soccer America Team of the Week Wednesday morning. The Kingston, Jamaica native has been awarded with two conference Player of the Week honors this season and, earlier this week, was named to College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Senior goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) brushed away six shots in Saturday’s game, boosting his season save total to 60. With those precious saves, Bell set a personal career-best for saves in a single season, surpassing his previous best of 57 set in his sophomore season. Currently, Bell is posting career numbers in save percentage (.822) as well. He also boasts a 0.81 goals against average and seven shutouts. His 1.03 career GAA is also currently the best in UB history over a four-year span. Bulls vs. Mastodons, Round 2 On Halloween, the fourth-seeded Bulls will take on the fifth-seeded IPFW Mastodons in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament. The game is a repeat of last year’s MAC quarterfinal matchup that was played at UB Stadium, a game in which came out in the Bulls’ favor by a count of 4-0. Earlier this season, UB came away with a narrow 1-0 shutout win at IPFW’s home field for its first conference win of the year. Up Next
