Men's Soccer Ties Western Michigan, 1-1KALAMAZOO, MI - The University at Buffalo and Western Michigan played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in Mid-American Conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls now sit at 6-6-2 overall (1-3-1 in the MAC) while Western Michigan is 5-10-1 overall (1-3-1 MAC).
Junior Geoff Thompson (Clarence, NY/Clarence) gave the Bulls the lead with a goal 34:13 into the game. The goal, which was his first of the season, came on a pass from junior Jenton Esworthy (Endicott, NY/Endicott). Western Michigan then tied the game with two seconds left in the first half on a one-time volley inside the right post. The physical match between the two conference rivals included 51 total fouls, eight yellow cards, three red cards and a post-match scuffle. The Bulls were issued a red card in the 90th minute and played the entire two overtime sessions with a man down but were still able to hold Western Michigan from scoring. The other two red cards were issued and the conclusion of the second overtime. Junior Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) played the entire 120 minutes in goal for Buffalo, stopping two shots. Buffalo outshot Western Michigan, 12-9, but landed just one shot on net, Thompson's goal. The Bulls will close out the regular season with a road game at Northern Illinois on
Tuesday, October 30 and a home match with St. Francis (PA) on Friday, November 2 (7:30 p.m.). |
