Pitra's First Career Goal Comes at Just the Right Time Sophomore Kevin Pitra scored his first goal of the year against Eastern Michigan. It was the first goal of his collegiate career and was an important one as well. UB trailed Eastern Michigan 2-1 in the second half before a Tim Songer goal made it 2-2. With just under two minutes remaining, Pitra knocked in the game winner of a deflection by the EMU goalkeeper for the 3-2 victory.
Butcher Still Scoring Senior Steve Butcher has continued his hot play. In the last seven games, Butcher has recorded nine goals, including three straight games with two goals. He also has four assists in that span as well. Butcher recorded two goals in games against Northern Illinois, Western Michigan and Long Island. Butcher now leads the team and the MAC in goals (13) and points (34).
Butcher, Songer Form Record Setting Tandem Tim Songer and Steve Butcher have become the most productive scoring tandem in UB history. They currently have a combined 62 points this year (Butcher 34, Songer 28), the most by any pair of players in UB history. It marks just the fifth time in school history that two players have recorded 20 or more points in a season and the first time since 1990, when three players reached 20 points. In addition, Songer and Butcher have each scored over ten goals (Butcher 13, Songer 11), making it just the second time in UB history that two players have two or more goals in the same season. The only other time that happened was in the 1981 season.
Butcher Cracks Century Points Mark
Butcher now has 113 career points, a UB school record. Butcher already holds the career records for goals scored (47) and this season moved into first in career assists with 19. He holds the top two spots for goals scored in a season with 18 last year and 16 in 1997. He also has the single season record for points scored with 43 last year, and is third in that same category with 36 points in 1997.
Butcher, Songer Moving Up Charts UB has had a player score 30 points in a season just five times in the programs history. With his 34 points this season, Steve Butcher has now hit that mark three of those five times. He holds the record with 43 points last season, the only 40-point season in UB history. Tim Songer is not far behind with 28 points this year, 7th best total for a season in UB history. If Songer reaches 30 points it will be the first time two players have hit 30 points in the same season. Butcher is currently first in career goals (47), assists (19), and points (113). Songer is 11th in career goals (15), fifth in assists (13) and 7th in points (43). In addition, Brian McCallion is 14th in career goals (12), fourth in assists (15) and 10th in points (39).
Players Stepping Up In the absence of defenders Joe Peplinski and Matt Yeates due to injuries, several players have stepped up to fill the gap on defense. Jarek Radzinski has moved into the sweeper position and Perry Duronio, Kevin Pitra and John Shannon have all moved back to help solidify the defense. These players have filled in well as UB has a goals against average of 1.30 as a team.
MAC Standings Akron leads the MAC at 5-0-1 and Kentucky is 4-0-1. Bowling Green is third at 3-2-1 while UB is in fourth place with a 3-3-0 conference mark.
