UB Falls in Overtime

Bulls Lose in Extra Period

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team suffered a loss in their first overtime game of the season, falling 3-2 to Bowling Green.

It was a rough game that saw a total of 42 fouls, five yellow cards and one ejection. Bowling Green got on the board first with a goal by Tony Malik on a cross from Bobby Biggs in the 14th minute. The Bulls would tie the game five minutes later when Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) was taken down in the box for a penalty kick. Steve Butcher (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) converted the penalty kick for a 1-1 tie at the half.

In the second half, the Falcons once again took the lead as Tony Mailk had a shot deflect off the post and Detrick Matthews was there to knock it in at the 54:43 mark and give Bowling Green the 2-1 lead. Once again, the Bulls would capitalize on a penalty kick. This time, Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was taken down and knocked the penalty kick in the 68th minute to tie the score at 2-2.

Bowling Green played the last 20 minutes of the game a man down, but held off the UB attack to force overtime. With under three minutes left in the first overtime period, Bowling Green broke the Bulls defense and Gene Braxton hit a cross to Bobby Biggs who then scored from 12 yards out on the left side for the game winner.

UB drops to 10-5-1 on the season and 3-3 in the MAC while Bowling Green improves to 9-8-1 and 3-2-1 in the MAC. UB will host their final game of the season against Marshall on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 11:30 a.m.
