Hit By A Speeding MAC Truck The men’s soccer team experienced a hard-felt defeat in its Mid-American Conference matches this past weekend after going toe-to-toe with Western Michigan in a 1-1 draw, while the team fell short at Northern Illinois, 1-0, on Sunday. UB’s lone goal in the first game was scored by junior Braden Byler (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep), who socred the equalizer with less than three minutes left in the second half. Freshman Teddy Ritter (Belford, NJ/Middletown North) entered in the second half and made four saves on four shots. In a low-scoring affair, the Huskies of Northern Illinois advanced early in the second half and put one past junior goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame). In UB’s last five games of the season, the team is 2-2-1 (each game against MAC opponents), after having gone an impressive 10-1-0 before that. Last season, the Bulls finished fourth in the conference with a 1-4-1 record and had a 8-8-2 overall tally.
Here’s The Clincher The two losses give UB a 2-2-1 MAC record, which contributes to its overall record of 12-3-1. The 2-2-1 record is also shared by Western Michigan, and puts both teams in a tie for third place in the conference behind MAC regular season champ Akron and runner-up Northern Illinois. Conference rules, in accords to a tie finish in the regular season, state that both teams be seeded according to head-to-head standings. Since the two teams’ only matchup resulted in a tie, UB and Western Michigan are then seeded on their records against ranked conference opponents. With both teams losing to ranked Akron, the final tally would be goal differential. UB is favored in this with six goals for and five goals against, while Western Michigan has seven goals for and nine goals against, therefore, giving UB a third place seed. The third-place Bulls will host their quarterfinal matchup versus the sixth-place team, either IPFW or Bowling Green on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
Point Production Junior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) and sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) each finished the regular season in amazing fashion accounting for 49 of the team’s 120 total points. Clarke’s 26 points and Catchpole’s 23 points are the most in a single season since 1993, and rank ninth and 10th respectively for a single season in UB history. The point totals currently rank third and fourth in the MAC, while Clarke’s 10 assists and an assist per game average of 0.62 ranks. Catchpole’s nine goals surpasses last year’s total of six, and puts him tied for 15th all-time in UB history. Up Next
