UB to Host Conference Tournament

The University at Buffalo will host the 2000 Mid-American Conference Men's Soccer Tournament this season. The tournament will feature quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with the final game being played at the highest remaining seed. The MAC has seven teams that participate in men's soccer, and all seven will be eligible for the tournament, which will take place from November 3-5.

Bulls Notch First MAC Win of the Season

Buffalo recorded its first MAC win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Western Michigan behind the play of Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa). UB got on the board first with a goal by Chris Vinci (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's). After a Bronco goal tied the game, McCallion scored in the 27th minute for a 2-1 UB lead. In the second half, McCallion then notched the game-winning goal in the 64th minute off a beautiful pass from John Shannon (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), securing the first conference win this season for Buffalo.

UB Ends in Tie with Niagara

UB and Niagara played a tough match that ended with a 2-2 tie after 120 minutes of play. The Purple Eagles opened the scoring with a goal less than two minutes into the game. UB's Mike Peplinski (Liverpool, NYLiverpool) would tie the game with his first goal of the year in the 11th minute, sending the game into halftime tied at 1-1. In the second half, the Bulls claimed the lead on a goal by Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) in the 61st minute. Niagara then broke free less than two minutes later for a goal to tie the game at 2-2, where it remained deadlocked through two 15-minute overtime periods for the final score.

Bulls Fall to Northern Illinois in Double Overtime

The Bulls' final regular season home game of the year ended in disappointing fashion, dropping a 2-1 contest to Northern Illinois. Buffalo got on the board first with a goal from Perry Duronio (Getzville, NY/Williamsville East) in the 74th minute. The Huskies came back and scored with less than two minute to go in regulation, forcing an overtime. In the second overtime period, NIU would get the game-winner on a goal by Nick Park at the 107:48 mark for the 2-1 win.

Record Watch

Senior Brian McCallion is quickly approaching the UB career assist record. McCallion has two this season, giving him 17 assists on his career. Steve Butcher currently holds the career record with 19 assists which he set last season. McCallion may not be the only Bulls' player to pass Butcher this season. Tim Songer has two assists this year, giving him 15 career assists, which currently ranks fifth on the all-time list. In addition, Songer and McCallion are currently ranked sixth and seventh respectively in career points scored. Songer has 54 points and McCallion has 49 on their careers. Songer also ranks sixth in career goals scored with 19.

Wozniak in NCAA Rankings

Buffalo goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) is currently ranked seventh in the NCAA for most saves in a game this season. Wozniak recorded 14 saves in a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut on September 3. The most saves in a game this year is 17 by two separate players.

The Bulls hit the road for the final weekend of regular season play. UB will finish its conference season with a Friday, October 27 game at Bowling Green, and will then finish with a game at Wright State on Sunday, October 29.
