UB Uses Late Rally to Win

Pitra Scores Game Winner in Final Two Minutes

BUFFALO, NY - The UB men's soccer team trailed by one in the final ten minutes, but scored twice, including the game winner in the final two minutes to take a 3-2 MAC victory over visiting Eastern Michigan.

Kevin Pitra (Solon, OH/Solon) scored is first career goal with just under two minutes remaining to break a 2-2 tie and give the Bulls the win. UB had the ball deep in the Eastern Michigan box and had one shot deflected, then a Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) shot was blocked by EMU goalie George Tomasso, but Pitra was waiting to knock the game winner into the net.

That game winner was set up by a Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) goal in the 81st minute. McCallion was knocked down on a breakaway inside the box, and Songer took the penalty kick and knocked it home to tie the score at 2-2 and spark the Bulls come back.

UB put up the games first goal as Steve Butcher (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) took a Songer deflection and scored against a wide open net in the 19th minute for 1-0 UB lead. Eastern Michigan came back and worked the ball well, dominating control of the ball most of the game. Chris King scored the first EMU goal in the 29th minute to send the game to halftime tied at 1-1. King would strike again in the second half with a goal off a deflected shot in the 51st minute, giving EMU the 2-1 lead before the Bulls charged back.

The Bulls improved to 10-4-1 on the season, the second straight season with 10 or more wins. UB also improves to 3-2 in the MAC and will host Bowling Green on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 1 pm. Eastern Michigan falls to 6-9-0 on the year and 1-4-0 in the MAC.
