Men's Soccer Defeats Bucknell

Bulls Post 2-1 Victory In Non-Conference Matchup

Dave Pidgeon (Dorval, Quebec/Bishop Whelan) scored on a penalty kick 2:48 into the second half to break a 1-1 tie as the Bulls went on to claim a 2-1 victory over Bucknell on Sunday. The Bulls improve to 6-6-1 overall while Bucknell falls to 4-8-0.

Bucknell opened the scoring 18:26 into the game on a header off an indirect kick from 25 yards out. The Bulls then responded with a goal of their own in the 30th minute when freshman Justin Higgins (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) knocked in a rebound. The goal was the freshman's second in the last three games.

Then, with just over three minutes into the second half, Buffalo was awarded a penalty kick when Bucknell goalkeeper Steve Whitaker was called for a foul. Pidgeon put the ball just out of reach of Whitaker to give the Bulls the 2-1 lead, which proved to be the final outcome.

Bucknell outshot Buffalo, 22-14, holding a 15-5 advantage in the second half but they could not capitalize. Sophomore Chris Vavrina (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) earned his first victory of the season in goal for Buffalo stopping six shots. Vavrina played the entire second half after replacing junior Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem). Wozniak made two saves in the first half.

The Bulls will close out their season on the road as they travel to Western Michigan (Sunday, October 28), Northern Illinois (Tuesday, October 30) and St. Francis (Sunday, November 4).
