Bulls Win Thriller Over Kentucky, 2-1

Geoff Thompson scores two goals for UB

BUFFALO, NY - Geoff Thompson (Clarence, NY/Clarence) scored two goals to lead the Buffalo men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 decision over Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at RAC Field. It was the Bulls' first-ever win over Kentucky in five tries.

Thompson's first goal came at the 8:07 mark when he was led perfectly by Patrick Beckley (Poughquag, NY/Arlington), raced down the left side, made a nifty move to elude two Wildcat defenders and put the ball in from six yards out.

Kentucky knotted the game at one in the 39th minute when Monty Frazier was able to head in a centering pass from Chris Austin.

The Bulls had a great chance to take a one-goal lead into halftime, but Dave Pidgeon (Dorval, PQ/Bishop Whelan) was robbed by a sprawling Wildcat goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum late in the first half.

The game remained tied until the 79th minute when Thompson struck again. The senior, playing in his final home game of the regular season, headed in a corner kick from Jeff Martinko (Shelby Township, MI/DeLaSalle Collegiate) for the gamewinner.

UB goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem), also playing in his final home game of the regular season, had a solid afternoon in net. He made six saves and held the Wildcats to one goal.

With the win, the Bulls improve to 6-6-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the MAC. Kentucky falls to 7-7-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the conference.
