Men's Soccer Records First MAC Win

Bulls Defeat Western Michigan 3-2

BUFFALO, NY — The UB men's soccer team recorded their first MAC win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Western Michigan and improved to 5-6-2 on the season.

The Bulls came out charging as UB recorded eight shots before the Broncos got off their first shot. Western Michigan goalkeeper Brad Smith made six saves in the first half to keep WMU in the game and prevent UB from running away with the game early. Buffalo got on the board in the 18th minute on a goal from Chris Vinci (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's), who redirected a pass from Matt Yeates (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's) for a 1-0 lead. Western Michigan came back in the 24th minute as Trevor Garrison scored off a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1.

That score would not last long has a few minutes later the Bulls would strike again. UB used great passing as Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) passed to Mike Peplinski (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), who then fed a wide open Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) for the go ahead goal in the 27th minute.

That lead would hold until midway through the second half when McCallion would strike again. This time, John Shannon (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and McCallion had a two-on-one breakaway. Shannon drew the defender to the left side and then passed to McCallion in the middle of the box who beat the goalie for a 3-1 UB lead. Western Michigan would add a late goal by Jon Richardson for the 3-2 final.

Buffalo improved to 5-6-2 on the year and 1-3-0 in the MAC. UB will host Northern Illinois on Sunday at 1pm to close out their home season.
