UB to Host Conference Tournament

The University at Buffalo will host the 2000 Mid-American Conference Men's Soccer Tournament this season. The tournament will feature quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with the final game being played at the highest remaining seed. The MAC has seven teams that participate in men's soccer, and all seven will be eligible for the tournament, which will take place from November 3-5.

Homecoming Not So Kind

After opening the season with 10-straight games on the road, the Bulls opened their home season against Kentucky, but suffered a 1-0 conference loss in the game. The Wildcats scored in the first four minutes of the game on a goal by Chris McDaniel. Both teams then played a physical game and neither squad could find the net as Kentucky came away with the 1-0 win.

Bulls End Losing Skid With 2-1 Win

The Bulls ended a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win at Radford on October 8. The Highlanders took an early lead with a late first half goal, but the Bulls came charging back in the second half as UB scored twice in 40 seconds to take the lead. Kevin Pitra (Solon, OH/Solon) scored off a corner kick from James Collins (Somerset, England) to tie the game. A short time later, Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) stole a pass in the midfield and went down to score and give the Bulls the lead. The win was secured when goalkeeper Adam Werth (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) made a save on a penalty kick to seal the win.

Songer Named MAC Player of the Week

Senior Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week on September 18. Songer scored the Bulls' lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Siena on September 15. He also tallied a goal and assisted on the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Long Island University on September 17, giving him two goals in two games during the week. Songer became the first UB player of the 2000-01 season to receive MAC Player of the Week honors, the second straight year he has accomplished that feat.

Record Watch

Senior Brian McCallion is quickly approaching the UB career assist record. McCallion has two this season, giving him 17 assists on his career. Steve Butcher currently holds the career record with 19 assists which he set last season. McCallion may not be the only Bulls' player to pass Butcher this season. Tim Songer has two assists this year, giving him 15 career assists, which currently ranks fifth on the all-time list. In addition, Songer and McCallion are currently ranked sixth and eighth respectively in career points scored. Songer has 53 points and McCallion has 43 on their careers. Songer also ranks sixth in career goals scored with 19.

Wozniak in NCAA Rankings

Buffalo goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) is currently ranked sixth in the NCAA for most saves in a game this season. Wozniak recorded 14 saves in a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut on September 3. The most saves in a game this year is 17 by two separate players.

Upcoming Action...

The Bulls will have three games this week, beginning with a short road trip to play at Niagara on Tuesday, October 17, at 4pm. UB will then return home and host two conference games. The Bulls will face Western Michigan on Friday, October 20, at 7pm and then host Northern Illinois on Sunday, October 22, at 1pm.
