Men's Soccer Upset By Western Michigan In Conference Play
Buffalo (8-5-1) drops its first MAC game of the season despite out-shooting the Broncos (3-10-1) 21-4 in the game. The Bulls have dropped two straight for the first time since the 2004 season. Both teams charged out of the gates in the opening minutes, manuevering through the muddy field and looking to break one for the game's first goal. With the first 45 minutes in the books, the score remained scoreless. Senior Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had two shots on goal before the first half expired.
Despite the one-sided statistical shot count, the Broncos managed to light up the scoreboard within the opening minute of the second half with a shot that slide into the bottom right corner of the net. Bronco forward Tom Oatley received the pass from Shaun Clements and dribbled past the UB defense to put his team up 1-0. With the sense of urgency applied, the Bulls intiated a steady attack that would pressure the Bronco defense relentlessly. Junior Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) had a chance to tie the match up, as he coasted in one-on-one with Bronco goalkeeper Casey Aubil, but Aubil managed to gobble up the shot and clear it out of harm's way. Within the closing 10 minutes of the match, the Bulls were able to tack on a few additional shots, but were unabled to break one past Aubil. Aubil brushed away 10 shots, increasing his conference-lead in saves to 58. Senior Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) made one save on two shots.
The Bulls return to the familiar site on Sunday, as they travel up to Niagara for a Big Four match that is slated to begin at 3 p.m. |
