BUFFALO, NY – The UB men's soccer team won its first Mid-American Conference game of the season Friday, as junior Braden Byler (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) netted two goals on four shots to send Bowling Green to their third MAC loss, 4-0. Three first-half goals proved costly for the visiting Falcons, leading to their 10th loss. The UB bench came out in numbers, resulting in two goals and two assists over their MAC counterpart.

Play was tight entering the 25th minute of play in the first half, when sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) was abruptly yanked down in the box by a Falcon defender. The infraction led to a penalty kick taken by Catchpole, and he rifled the shot to the bottom right corner, putting the Bulls up 1-0. After Catchpole's ninth goal of the season, he caught junior Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) with a lofty pass, and Knapp fired an acrobatic scissor kick that pierced the twine, adding his fourth goal of the season. With a 2-0 lead, many of UB's reserves entered the game and they made the most of their time on the field, playing hard and battling back against the fortifying Falcon offense.

UB held the advantage in corner kicks by a 6-0 count. One of those corner kicks, kicked by freshman Elbrus Tambi (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood), floated high and into the box and was catapulted skyward on a header from fellow freshman Dezi Lara (Fyzabad, Trinidad/Naparima). Byler would settle the ball and blast home his second goal of the season.

The Bulls would enter the second half with most of their reserves still on the field and would not let down, outshooting the Falcons 11-6. Byler would strike again for his second goal of the game after being fed the ball in front of the net by junior Matt Grabowski (Lockport, NY/Lockport). The shot trickled past the goalkeeper and added to the monster deficit. Freshman Teddy Ritter (Belford, NJ/Middletown North) saw his first time as a Bull, as he added two key saves after subing for junior Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) with 14 minutes left.

The Bulls cap off their home season on Sunday, where the three senior captains will be honored as the team faces new MAC rival IPFW at 1 pm on UB Stadium.
