In the team’s first MAC game of the season, the 20th-ranked Bulls were defeated by a dominant Akron squad ranked second in the nation. This is the 12th time both of the teams met and the fourth consecutive time the Zips came out on top. The Zips lead the all-time series 10-1-0. Akron’s Ross McKenzie netted two goals, to claim sole possession for most goals in the MAC, while fellow Zip Sinisa Ubiparipovic added a goal and an assist. The Bulls were led by sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) who contributed with two shots on goal. The loss was the first Mid-American Conference game of the season for the Bulls, and extends a streak of six seasons in which the team did not pull out a win in the first game of the MAC schedule.
Junior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton), along with last week’s Mid-American Conference Player of the Week honor, was named to two national teams of the week last Tuesday. College Soccer News added Clarke for his three goal and one assist effort resulting in UB victories over Canisius and Boston University. Along with that, the junior forward was named to the Soccer America Men’s Team of the Week. Clarke leads the team in points (24) and assists (10). Bulls Ranked In Three Major Polls As of Monday, UB was ranked 20th in the nation according to the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll released last Tuesday. At the time, UB maintained a 10-1-0 record and shared the nation’s lead for most wins with MAC rival Akron. Along with top 20 recognition, UB is ranked second in the New York regional poll behind St. John’s University. The team was also named in the top 30 poll according to College Soccer News, claiming a ranking of 29th. Defensive Effort The Bulls’ offensive spurt has resulted in a 206-89 shot differential, and the defensive units are a big reason for that, holding opponents to an average of only 8.09 shots per game. Junior Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) holds a 0.83 goals against average and has made 41 saves. Bell is one win away from holding sole possession of second place on UB’s all-time list for most wins in a single season. Up Next
