Bill Norberg Sweeps MAC Awards

Senior Named Scholar Athlete and Men's Soccer Player Of The Week By Conference

Bill Norberg (Allison Park, PA/Shaler) has been named Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week just one day after picking up the MAC Player of the Week honor in men's soccer. Norberg, a senior sociology major with a grade point average above a 3.0, was chosen along with Miami volleyball athlete Jennifer Eaton for the scholar athlete award.

Norberg was the difference in a 3-2 victory over 23rd-ranked Marshall on Friday evening. After falling behind 1-0 early, the senior scored a pair of goals on back-to-back direct kicks 50 seconds apart to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead. The Bulls then tallied a third goal before Marshall added a late goal for the final outcome.

The loss was just the second of the season for Marshall, who came into the game ranked 23rd in the last National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll.

Both Norberg goals were identical as the senior placed the ball in the left corner of the net just inside the post to beat the Marshall goaltender. The first goal snapped a scoreless string of 312 minutes and 26 seconds without a goal, the team's longest scoreless streak since a three-game road trip September 24-October 26 of 2000.

Norberg currenlty leads the team in scoring with three goals for six points. In his first three seasons at Buffalo, Norberg had collected just four assists in 55 games.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.

The Bulls will hit the road for a match on Sunday, October 14 against Kentucky (3 p.m.) before returning home for non-conference games against Binghamton (Tuesday, October 16) and Canisius (Friday, October 19).
