Buffalo Plays #7 Saint Louis To A 3-3 Draw
Dan Stevens levels the match with eight seconds remaining in regulation
ST. LOUIS, MO – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team battled to a 3-3 stalemate on the road against seventh-ranked Saint Louis University on Saturday night. Dan Bulley (Exeter, England/St. Peter's), Marc Stencel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Dan Stevens (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each tallied goals for the Bulls in the draw.
Dan Stevens | Saint Louis (4-1-3), the seventh-ranked team in the nation according to College Soccer News, opened the scoring less than three minutes into the contest on a goal by Kyle Hayes. That was the lone goal of the first half as Saint Louis took 1-0 advantage to the intermission.
Dan Bulley | But as they have been all season long, Buffalo (7-3-2) proved to be a second half team as the Bulls levelled the match when sophomore Dan Bulley found the back of the net in the 57th minute off a feed from Dominic Oppong (Scarborough, Ontario/Cardinal Newman). For Bulley, the goal was his team-leading fifth of the season and he has now scored in each of the last three matches for the Bulls.
Saint Louis responded quickly to Bulley's goal however as the Billikens were able to retake the lead less than a minute later on a penalty kick by Kyle Patterson. Patterson then added to the Saint Louis lead with another goal less than two minutes later and all of the sudden SLU had a 3-1 lead in the 59th minute.
Marc Stencel | Despite the two-goal deficit, the Bulls continued to push forward and they were rewarded for their grit, determination and character in the 84th minute when junior Marc Stencel scored his first goal of the season from six yards out off a through ball by Dan Stevens. It looked as though the Stencel tally might just be a consolation until Stevens levelled the match with just eight seconds remaining in regulation time. For Stevens, the goal was his first of the season and it meant the Bulls would go to overtime for the sixth time in their last nine matches.
Despite outshooting Saint Louis 3-1 in the extra 20 minutes, the Bulls were unable to find a game-winning goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Robert Shuttleworth (Tonawanda, NY/Nichols) made seven saves during the contest for UB while the Bulls forced Billiken goalkeeper Ross Kaufman into making six saves. Buffalo has now scored 14 of their 17 goals this season in either the second half of matches or overtime
The Bulls will return to action next Friday, October 12 when the travel to Kalamazoo, MI to take on the Broncos of Western Michigan in a Mid-American Conference contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
