Bulls Win MAC Opener Against IPFW

The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team put forth a strong effort, defeating a feisty IPFW team, 1-0, for its first Mid-American Conference win of the season. The win also marks the Bulls’ fifth shutout and third-straight shutout over IPFW in three all-time meetings. Senior Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) netted home the game-winner in the 85th minute to secure the win. Junior Dan Stevens (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was credited with the assist. Senior goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) captured his conference-leading sixth shutout.

Liverpudlian Connection

Liverpool, NY natives Brian Knapp and Dan Stevens have proved to be a sustainable 1-2 punch for the Bulls offense, as they have combined for 14 of the team’s 55 points this year. Each year since his freshman year, Knapp has set career highs in every offensive category and is on pace to set a career-high in goals; while Stevens, a junior transfer from Oneonta State, leads the team with six assists. He has assisted in four straight games and currently leads the MAC in that category.

Un-Bell-Ievable

Goalkeeper Daniel Bell, with a 6-2-1 overall record, remains a sinister presence in net for the Bulls. As of Sept. 24, Bell was ranked in the top ten in Division I in goals against average (0.528, 10th) and save percentage (0.878, 8th). As of Oct. 2, Bell has a 0.48 GAA and 0.881 save percentage, both of which leads the MAC.

495:00 And Counting...

In all 11 games this season, the Bulls have not allowed a first-half goal. The team has out-scored its opponents 18-7 and holds an edge in shots by period by a count of 144-117.

Up Next

Buffalo (7-3-1) looks to continue its impressive success on the road (5-1-1 away), as it faces off against MAC rival Bowling Green on Friday at 4:00 pm and Penn State Sunday at 3 pm.
