Bulls Shut Out In Second Straight Game

For the second straight game, UB was shut out by a conference opponent. The Bulls fell to Marshall 3-0 on Friday night after falling 3-0 at Akron the previous weekend. The game was knotted at 0-0 until under 20 minutes remaining in the game. The Thundering Herd got a goal from Brent Sobczak in the 74th minute for a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Marshall got another goal, this time from Chris Donovan to extend the lead. With five minutes to play, Marshall scored the final goal of the game on a shot by Dennis Ahebwa for the 3-0 final.

Two Straight Shutouts Not Common for UB

After two straight 3-0 losses, one at Akron and the second at Marshall, the Bulls fell to 0-2-0 in the MAC. It was the first time since the 1997 season that UB suffered two straight games with no goals. In that season, UB lost to Central Connecticut 1-0 in overtime, then followed that with a 2-0 loss at Howard.

Songer Named MAC Player of the Week

Senior Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week on September 18. Songer scored the Bulls' lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Siena on September 15. He also tallied a goal and assisted on the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Long Island University on September 17, giving him two goals in two games during the week. Songer became the first UB player of the 2000-01 season to receive MAC Player of the Week honors, the second straight year he has accomplished that feat.

Record Watch

Senior Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) is quickly approaching the UB career assist record. McCallion has two this season, giving him 17 assists on his career. Steve Butcher currently holds the career record with 19 assists which he set last season. McCallion may not be the only Bulls' player to pass Butcher this season. Tim Songer has two assists this year, giving him 15 career assists, which currently ranks fifth on the all-time list. In addition, Songer and McCallion are currently ranked sixth and ninth respectively in career points scored. Songer has 53 points and McCallion has 41 on their careers. Songer also ranks sixth in career goals scored with 19.

Wozniak in NCAA Rankings

Buffalo goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) is currently ranked fifth in the NCAA for most saves in a game this season. Wozniak recorded 14 saves in a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut on September 3. The most saves in a game this year is 17 by two separate players.

UB to Host Conference Tournament

The University at Buffalo will host the 2000 Mid-American Conference Men's Soccer Tournament this season. The tournament will feature quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with the final game being played at the highest remaining seed. The MAC has seven teams that participate in men's soccer, and all seven will be eligible. The tournament will take place from November 3-5.

Upcoming Action...

The Bulls have yet another road weekend coming up. UB, which has yet to play a home game this year, will face two non-conference opponents, beginning with a matchup at Duke on October 6. UB will then play at Radford on October 8. The Bulls will play their first home game of the year on October 13 when they host Kentucky.
