A Minor Setback The UB Bulls rode the proverbial rollercoaster ride this past week, as they handed a loss to one of their toughest opponents of the year, then two days later, failed to score a goal at home in a loss. The team was down 1-0 at the half against regionally-ranked Colgate, but battled tough in the second frame, outshooting the Raiders 9-3. Sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) converted on a penalty kick to tie the game, then junior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) swooped in for the kill, scoring the game-winning goal in a wide open net after the Colgate goalkeeper came out to stop the ball. After the enduring win, the men’s team returned home to face St. Franics (PA) Sunday. The Red Flash came in on fire, capitalizing on the Bulls’ fatigued style of play, and scored the lone goal in the game early in the first half. The 1-0 final tally sent the Bulls to their first loss of the season, and the first game in which the team failed to score a goal. Leading The Charge At the conclusion of the week, sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) and junior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) lead the team with 17 points. Catchpole has seven goals in nine games and was ranked 20th in the nation in points. Clarke, with his nine assists, had claimed the top spot in the nation according to last week’s statistics. Goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) matched his career season-high in wins with eight vs. Colgate, and now holds a 0.67 GAA with 30 saves.
Junior Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) has been an iron man for this team this season. As of Monday, he has three game-winning goals and five assists from the midfield. His herculean throw-ins and corner kicks that bend perfectly towards the net are key reasons why the Bulls are 8-1. Local Connection The trio of junior Matt Grabowski (Lockport, NY/Lockport) , sophomore John DeCarlo (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) and freshman Marc Stencel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) have provided a tremendous spark off the bench. With a familiar crowd on hand for most home games, these newcomers have tallied up two goals and an assist on nine shots in their limited but important time on the field. Up Next
The Bulls look to pick up the pace as they enter the last stretch of the season. The team hosts Canisius Friday at 7 pm and then travels to Boston University for an afternoon matchup starting at 3 pm Sunday. |
