The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team split in its two contests last week, falling in a hard-fought battle with Duquesne, 2-1, only to rebound on Sunday by blanking Siena, 2-0. After a 0-0 tie score entering the second half, the Dukes (4-3-1) took charge, converting with a shot off the crossbar that deflected into the net. The goal broke senior goalkeeper Daniel Bell’s (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) run of 360:30 minutes of not letting in a goal. Duquesne would then add another one to the scoreboard on a 3-on-1 breakaway in the 88th minute. One minute later, sophomore Marc Stencel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) would answer back with the Bulls’ lone goal. Senior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) would record a goal and an assist in Sunday’s shut-out win over Siena. Clarke put the Bulls on the board with a loft over the Siena goalkeeper from the left side of the box, and would assist on senior Brian Knapp’s (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) second goal of the year at the 54:21 mark. Assisting on Clarke’s game-winning goal was junior Dan Stevens (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), who has now recorded an assist in three straight games.
In Sunday’s 2-0 shutout over Siena, head coach John Astudillo made his claim in school history by posting his 150th career win, becoming the only coach in UB soccer history to reach that mark. Coach Astudillo became the all-time men’s soccer wins leader against a familiar team, Siena, on September 9, 2001, shutting out the Saints, 4-0. Clarke Cracks Top 10 In Career Points Racking up a goal and an assist in Sunday’s win, senior Andrae Clarke cracked the top 10 in career points at UB. Clarke is now tied with Darren Boecher (1990-93) for ninth all-time, accumulating 44 points since 2003, which included a 29-point performance last season. So far, Clarke has five goals and two assists for 12 points.
The Bulls have provided an iron curtain on the opposition in the first 10 games of the 2006 season, holding opponents scoreless in the first half of their respective games. At 6-3-1, the Bulls are off to their third-best start in the Astudillo era (1989-present). Up Next
Buffalo (6-3-1) prepares for its first Mid-American Conference game of the season, as it travels to IPFW on Friday. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. |
