Bulls Prevail, Upending Colgate In Dramatic Form, 2-1
Clarke boots game-winner for eighth straight victory
 Andrae Clarke |
HAMILTON, NY – Down 1-0 at the end of the first half, the UB men's soccer team pulled together a masterful comeback against Colgate Friday night with a 2-1 win at Van Doren Field. The victory extends the team's win streak to eight games, as they fought hard against a very aggressive Raiders squad who fall to 3-2-2. UB's endurance proved to be the benefactor near the end of the game, as they outshot Colgate 9-3 in the second half.
Neither team could establish a rhythm early, with both team's defenses hustling hard to prevent the other team from scoring early. Colgate hit pay dirt first at the 35:24 mark. Bryant Meckley converted off a crisp pass from Charlie Lambropoulos to the left side of the net to make the score 1-0. This was the second game this season where the opposition had scored first on the Bulls.
 Lee Catchpole |
Both teams would enter the second half with a faster pace, but also with flared tempers. By the game's conclusion, the teams would combine to commit 20 fouls. One of those fouls came at the 76 minute mark, as the Raiders were called for a hand-ball in the box, a violation that would lead to a penalty kick and one of the more exciting features in the game. Sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) would take the penalty kick and capitalize, blasting a shot to the lower right corner and past the diving Colgate goalkeeper Doug Litvack.
 Brian Knapp |
With the game tied at 1-1, each team fired up their game a bit more, in search of that coveted game-winning goal. The team's training would ultimately provide enough hustle to lift the Bulls to victory, as junior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) managed to draw out the Raider keeper and hammer home the game-winning goal to the right corner. Junior Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) found Clarke, who had been double-teamed, with the pass to clinch the game. The Raiders tried for a last-stitch effort but could not get past the Buffalo defense.
Junior Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) recorded his eighth win, making six saves, while Raider goalkeeper Doug Litvack also recorded six saves.
The Bulls extend their record to 8-0, which is tops in the nation. The team looks forward to Sunday where they host St. Francis (PA) at UB Stadium at 2 pm.
