Men's Soccer Suffers Tough LossVESTAL, N.Y. An own goal by a Buffalo defender just two minutes into the second half gave Binghamton a 1-0 victory over the UB men's soccer team in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at West Gym Field. Binghamton's Stephen Rybak, who had entered the game because of an injury just moments before, kicked the ball towards the net at the 47:00 mark. The ball was deflected by the Buffalo keeper, but in an attempt to clear the ball, the defender misfired into his own net for the only goal of the game. The Bearcats controlled possession for much of the first half, holding an 11-7 shot advantage at the break and 21-16 for the game. Both teams battled even following the lone goal, with both goalkeeper's stopping several potential goals. Chris Vavrina (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland), making his first start of the season, played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bulls, and recorded a career-high eight saves. Binghamton goalkeeper Ian Wendel also had a career-high eight saves in recording his first complete game shutout of the season. The loss drops the Bulls to 3-4-1 overall. Binghamton improves to 2-4-1 on the season. |
