Junior goaltender Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) was honored Monday as the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for his stellar play in net during UB’s seven-game win streak. Bell posted three wins last week, allowing one goal vs. St. Bonaventure Wednesday and pitching back-to-back shutouts against Centenary and Western Illinois to clinch the 2005 Kick-off Classic title last weekend. Bell has tallied 19 saves and seven wins this season. He is one win away from matching his season high of eight wins last season. He leads the league in shutouts with four, and is second in GAA (0.57) and save percentage (.826).
The UB Bulls continued their winning ways as they shut out both of their opponents last weekend en route to the 2005 Kick-off Classic title. The team outscored its opponents 10-0 on the weekend that included a 7-0 win over Centenary and a 3-0 win over Western Illinois. Sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) led the way with three goals on the weekend. Catchpole, along with sophomore Shyle Braithwaite (Brampton, Ontario/Philip Pocock Catholic), senior Mbwana Johnson (San Fernando, Trinidad/Pleasantville), and junior goaltender Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) made the weekend’s All-Tournament Team.
Junior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) has come blazing out of the gates this season by scoring at least one point in six of seven UB contests. With 15 points, Clarke has been instrumental in the Bulls’ success by effectively distributing the ball, as he has recorded nine assists in six games, and has been a threat by scoring three goals in three games. Clarke leads the MAC in assists and is tied for first in total points with two other players, including sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay). Clarke appeared in 13 games last season and posted seven points in three starts. Best Start Since 1990 The UB men’s soccer team has witnessed a revival of the program since the fateful 2003 season, where the team went 1-12-3. The 7-0-0 record this season is the best start to a season since 1990, where the team won its first nine games and went on to finish at an impressive 14-3-1. However, 1990 was the final year of Division II competition for the Bulls, where they would glide headstrong into Division-I terrain. The 1990 Bulls outscored their opponents 17-4, while the 2005 Bulls squad has a 27-4 favor. Up Next
