Catchpole Flashes Two Scores Against St. Francis

Men's Soccer takes a 4-2 decision against Red Flash to remain undefeated

LORETTO, PA -- Freshman Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) scored two goals of his own and sophomore Andrae Clarke (Bronx, NY/Dewitt Clinton) added a goal and two assists to lead the University at Buffalo men's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over St. Francis (PA) University on Sunday.

Clarke opened the scoring just over 16 minutes into the contest when a fortunate bounce put the ball on his foot at the goal line. Senior Andrew Butler (Yorkshire, England/Mirfield) challenged Red Flash freshman goalkeeper Simon Fox for a cross in the box. The ball deflected off Butler and fell to Clarke, who slammed the ball into the net to give the Bulls (6-0-1 overall) a 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute later, Catchpole was on the receiving end of a Clarke cross and the freshman headed the ball to the upper left corner. Catchpole finished on a breakaway at the 27-minute mark to spot the Bulls a 3-0 advantage.

The Red Flash (1-3 overall) stormed back behind Bernie Showers' goals. The senior netted a penalty kick with 6:18 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 3-1 at halftime. In the 74th minute, Showers received a throw-in from freshman Jarron Brooks and buried a right-footed volley shot into the left corner to bring the Flash to within a goal.

Bulls' sophomore Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) sealed the game with a one-touch blast from 20-yards out with less than 14 minutes remaining in the game.

Fox made six saves in the loss, while sophomores Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) (81:00) and Brandon Foley (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) (9:00) combined to make two saves for the Bulls. The Red Flash held a slim 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bulls next game is Wednesday at 4:00 pm as they travel to Niagara for a renewal of a local rivalry.
