The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team came away with three key shutout victories last week, finishing a stellar 3-0-0 and boosting its overall record to 5-2-1. The Bulls managed to come out on top against Cornell Wednesday night, 1-0, in double overtime, as senior forward Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) continued his offensive hot streak by hammering home the game-winner at the 103rd minute. Two days later would mark the team’s homecoming against St. Bonaventure after having played in three straight road games. Senior midfielder Mat Wilkinson (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavior), with his parents in attendance all the way from Australia, scored his first collegiate goal, lifting Buffalo with the game-winner in the 74th minute, 1-0. In Sunday’s match-up with Canisius, UB came out firing on all cylinders, scoring four goals, all coming in the second half. Sophomore forward Jon Martin (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) netted his first two goals as a Bull, coming within six minutes of each other. Seniors Kevin Balkanloo (Hudson, OH/Hudson) and Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) also contributed with goals in the win.
Senior goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) has been masterful for the Bulls in net this season, carrying over much of his success from last season, in which he became the Bulls’ all-time leader in career wins and wins in a season. Bell posted three consecutive shutouts over a five-day period, lowering his overall GAA from 0.69 to 0.40 and remaining atop the Mid-American Conference in the category. Bell also leads the MAC in save percentage with .906 and is tied for first with Akron’s Evan Bush in shutouts with four.
In the three games played in last week, there were multiple occurrences in which a UB player had recorded its first-ever collegiate goal or assist. In Friday’s 1-0 shutout win over St. Bonaventure, senior Mat Wilkinson recorded his first collegiate goal in the game-winner. On Sunday, sophomore Jon Martin scored his first two goals as a Bull. Also in Sunday’s 4-0 win, senior Kevin Balkanloo netted his first goal in a Blue and White jersey and freshman Matthew Contino (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph’s) converted on his first two collegiate assists, coming on both of Martin’s two goals. Second-Half Warriors The Bulls have proved to be a second-half offensive team this season, scoring nine of their 14 goals in the final 90 minutes. In the opposite half, UB’s defense have not allowed a first half goal in the team’s first eight games. Buffalo leads the MAC in every offensive category, scoring a conference-best 14 goals on 41 points, while leading in goals allowed and GAA.
Buffalo (5-2-1) takes a light break to prepare for Duquesne (3-3-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. under the lights at UB Stadium. The team then travels to Siena on Sunday for an afternoon game starting at 1:00 p.m.?? |
