Men's Soccer Weekly ReleaseUB Beats Long Island Buffalo defeated Long Island University for the second straight season, winning 2-1 this past weekend. Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was the big key for the Bulls in that game, scoring one goal and assisting in the other. Songer assisted Geoff Thompson (Clarence, NY/Clarence) for the first goal, giving UB a 1-0 lead. Songer would add another Bulls' goal early in the second half off an assist from Matt Yeates (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's), giving UB a 2-0 lead. LIU would add a late goal for the 2-1 final.
Bulls and Siena Deadlocked After Overtime UB finished with their first tie of the season, a 1-1 deadlock with Siena this past weekend. Tim Songer scored the only UB goal of the game on an assist from Perry Duronio (Getzville, NY/Williamsville East). UB would hold on to the 1-0 lead until the 83rd minute, when Siena would tie the game to force an overtime. Neither team could score in the two, 15-minute overtime periods as both teams took four shots but could not find the net.
Record Watch Senior Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) is quickly approaching the UB career assist record. McCallion has two this season, giving him 17 assists on his career. Steve Butcher currently holds the career record with 19 assists which he set last season. McCallion may not be the only Bulls' player to pass Butcher this season. Tim Songer has two assists this year, giving him 15 career assists, which currently ranks fifth on the all-time list. In addition, Songer and McCallion are currently ranked sixth and ninth respectively in career points scored. Songer has 51 points and McCallion has 41 on their careers.
Wozniak Records Shutout Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) played an outstanding game between the pipes in the season-opener against Central Connecticut State. Wozniak recorded a career-best 14 saves in the game in helping UB hold on for a 2-0 victory. Those 14 saves matched his career saves total going into the season. It was the first non-combined shutout for Wozniak in his career. He had two combined shutouts last season, playing one half in each of those games, but played the full 90 minutes against CCSU.
UB to Host Conference Tournament The University at Buffalo will host the 2000 Mid-American Conference Men's Soccer Tournament this season. The tournament will feature quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with the final game being played at the highest remaining seed. The MAC has seven teams that participate in men's soccer, and all seven will be eligible. The tournament will take place from November 3-5.
Upcoming Action... The Bulls have a short week ahead, with just one game on the slate. UB will open up their Mid-American Conference schedule when they travel to play at Akron. The Zips have won the MAC regular season championship each of the last three years and in four of the past five years. Over that time, Akron has beaten UB five straight times, the closest game being a 3-2 Akron win in the third overtime period in the quarterfinals of the 1998 MAC Tournament. Date Team Time/Result C.
