Men’s Soccer Notches Win Over Long Island

UB Scores Once in Each Half for 2-1 Win

BROOKLYN, NY – The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team bounced back from a double overtime tie on Friday night and record a 2-1 win at Long Island University. It was the second-straight year the Bulls have defeated the Blackbirds.

In the first half, Geoff Thompson (Clarence, NY/Clarence) scored off a corner kick from Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), knocking a header into the top left corner for the first goal of the game. The goal came in the 7th minute and that 1-0 lead would hold through the first half.

UB came out quickly again in the second half, scoring their second goal of the game in the first three minutes of the second half. Tim Songer would score his team-best third goal of the season off a pass from Matt Yeates (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph’s) at the 48:14 mark and give UB a 2-0 lead. Long Island would come back and cut the lead in half, as Fedir Ilnitskyy would score in the 55th minute after stealing a pass and scoring from 15 yards out to make it a 2-1 game.

It was a physical game, that saw a total of 49 fouls, and Long Island also received four cards as a team. The Bulls outshot LIU 12-10 on the game and goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) recrded four saves on the day.

Buffalo improves to 3-2-1 on the season and will have a week off to prepare for their Mid-American Conference opener. The Bulls will travel to play at Akron on September 24, at 1 pm.
