Bulls Win Fifth-Straight, Defeating Cornell 2-1BUFFALO, NY – For the second-straight match, and third in the last four, the University at Buffalo men's soccer team played beyond the regulation 90 minutes. And for the second-straight time, the Bulls found a game-winning goal in the overtime session, pushing UB's winning streak to five-straight matches. Dominic Oppong (Scarborough, Ontario/Cardinal Newman) scored to tie the match with 57 seconds remaining and Martin John (Ottawa, Ontario/Lisgar Collegiate Institute) netted the game-winner in the third minute of overtime to give Buffalo the win. Cornell (3-2-0) opened the scoring in the first half when Matt Bouraee pounced on an opportunity created by some indecision in the Buffalo defense, giving the Big Red a 1-0 lead. The goal was one of very few opportunities in a scrappy first stanza that saw the two teams combine for 23 fouls.
Buffalo (5-2-0) pushed for an equalizer throughout the second half and nearly had one when Justin Fredsell (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) just missed over the crossbar in the 70th minute. But just when it looked as though the Bulls might see their four-match win streak come to an end, Dominic Oppong found the net to send the match to overtime. The play began with Alex Marrello (Burnaby, British Columbia/Alpha Secondary) finding Oppong just outside of the Cornell box, Oppong spotted Big Red goalkeeper Luca Cerretani off of his goal line and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. Early in the overtime session, the Bulls earned a corner kick, which Marrello took from the goalkeeper's left-hand side. Marrello sent a dangerous ball into the box that Dan Gwyther (London, England/Woodcote) was able to get a head to. Gwyther's header fell to the feet of Martin John who shot the ball through a maze of bodies and into the back of the net, giving the Bulls a 2-1 overtime win.
For Dominic Oppong and Martin John, the goals were their first as members of the Buffalo squad. Oppong and John were the seventh and eight different goalscorers for the Bulls this season, no player has scored multiple times yet for UB. Robert Shuttleworth (Tonawanda, NY/Nichols) was again in goal for Buffalo. He made three saves in picking up the win. Alex Marrello's two helpers gave him three for the weekend as he also registered an assist Friday night at St. Bonaventure. Next weekend the Bulls hit the road for a pair of contests, Friday, September 21 UB will be at Bucknell and Sunday, September 23 the blue and white will be at Detroit. Buffalo returns home to UB Stadium on Friday, September 28 when they open Mid-American Conference play against Bowling Green, kickoff for that match is scheduled for 7 p.m. |
