Bulls Shutout Host Marquette 4-0

The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team opened the Marquette Invitational on Friday, September 11 by shutting out host Marquette, 4-0. Bulls’ newcomer Mike Unwin (Basingstoke, England/North Iowa CC) scored two goals for the Bulls including his first career goal. Goalkeeper Nick Fetterman registered a career-high six saves while earning his second shutout of the season.

Marquette played a lopsided first half as they outshot the Bulls, 12-1. The Bulls managed to hold a 1-0 lead through the break off a header by Rich Wilson for his first tally of the season.

In the second half, the tables turned as the Bulls capitalized on their scoring opportunities. The Bulls held an 11-7 shot advantage over the Golden Eagles in the second half. Unwin recorded his first career goal as he fired a shot from inside the top of the box, set up by Dan Bulley. The Bulls furthered their lead 3-0 off a lose rebound, scooped up and fired in the back of the net by Lucas Bassan. Unwin closed out the Bulls’ scoring with his second of the night, off a long diagonal by newcomer Risto Latti (Hyunikaa, Finland/Sueitsin Lukio) to put Bulls in the lead 4-0.

Bulls Succumb to Blue Demons 5-1

The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team traveled to DePaul University to close out the Marquette Invitational against the home Blue Demons. Down 1-0, Bulls’ defender Casey Derkacz (Hamburg, NY/Penn State) dropped a perfectly-placed corner kick into a crowd of blue and white jerseys. Bulley went aerial, heading the ball past the Blue Demons’ keeper to tie the contest, 1-1 at 37:30.

In the final 16 minutes of the contest, the Blue Demons scored four answered goals off eight shots to capture a 5-1 victory over the Bulls.

Unwin and Fetterman Honored

Unwin and Fetterman were named to the Marquette Invitational All-Tournament Team. Unwin recorded two goals in the opening contest of the Invitational versus Marquette on Friday, September 11 while Fetterman kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard in the contest with six saves off 19 total shots.

Up Next: Cleveland State

The Bulls will face Cleveland State in their 2009 home opener at UB Stadium on Friday, September 18 at 7:30pm. This will mark the seventh time the two teams will meet. The Bulls hold a 2-3-1 overall record versus the Vikings, who have outscored the Bulls 20-7.
