Buffalo Beats St. Bonaventure In Overtime, 2-1OLEAN, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team ran their win streak to four-straight as they defeated St. Bonaventure University in overtime, 2-1.
Buffalo (4-2-0) struck first on the night when Thoresen got on the end of a corner kick from Alex Marrello (Burnaby, British Columbia/Alpha Secondary) and headed it past the Bonnies' goalkeeper David Flynn to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. St. Bonaventure (1-3-1) struck back in the 38th minute when Samuel Maheu beat Buffalo goalkeeper Robert Shuttleworth (Tonawanda, NY/Nichols) on a rebound to level the match at 1-1. The goal was the first allowed by Shuttleworth in over 338 minutes in goal for UB. The Buffalo offense, led by Dan Stevens' (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) two shots on goal, pressed for a game-winner in the second half, but the Bulls were unable to find the back of the net. On the defensive end, the Bulls defense held St. Bonaventure without a shot on goal in the second half, so, for the second-consecutive Friday night, Buffalo would need more than 90 minutes to find a victory.
But once again the Bulls were able to find an overtime victory when Dan Gwyther came up with the biggest play of the night. Gwyther, who did not start because he was battling an illness throughout the match, scored from in-close on a deflection off a set piece taken by Dave Chojnowski (Rochester, NY/Hilton). With the two goals tonight by Thoresen and Gwyther, Buffalo has now has six different goalscorers provide the Bulls' six goals for the season. The Bulls will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, September 16, when they host the Big Red of Cornell at UB Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. |
