ITHACA, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team showed great patience and resilience Wednesday night, contesting with Ivy League opponent Cornell for 103 minutes at a 0-0 draw. The Bulls capitalized on a late break, as senior captain Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) rifled a shot 10 yards out past a diving Cornell goalkeeper, settling the score at 1-0.

Both teams were competitve, as Buffalo (3-2-1) narrowly won the shot battle, 3-1, after the first half of play. In the second half, despite UB's best efforts, the Big Red (1-3-1) managed to come away with four corner kicks, each seizing an opportunity to put one past UB goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame). The Bulls would continue to pressure Cornell in its own end, taking eight shots in the second half, three of them being on goal. Freshman Ville Wahlsten (Naantali, Finland/Naantali/Aurajoki) almost managed to put away the Big Red in the last 10 seconds of the second half, heading the ball low on net but was saved by Cornell goalkeeper Luca Cerretani. With 90 minutes in the books, both teams were fired up in anticipation for the game-winning goal coming in the first extra session.

Following an empty-scoring first overtime period, the Bulls finally broke through the fiesty Cornell defense, as Clarke drove in the box unassisted for the lone goal of the match. Seniors Erik Jaanimagi (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) and Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) were among the top contributors in the win, combining for eight shots in the match.

With Wednesday's performance, Clarke has now scored four goals in his last two games, and currently sits atop of the Mid-American Conference in goals. Bell made four saves between the pipes for his second shutout of the season. He now posts a GAA of 0.69 and a save percentage of .875, both of which lead the conference.

After finishing their three-game road trip with a record of 2-1-0, the Bulls return to UB Stadium Friday night at 7 pm to face off against St. Bonaventure in a doubleheader with the women's soccer team. The men's game will be broadcast on UB's student-run internet radio station, WRUB, and can be found at http://www.subboard.com/new_wrub/.
