History Repeats Itself for Bulls, Jaanimagi The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team shut out the Siena Saints Sunday, 3-0, providing a similar style of play to last season’s 4-0 victory over Siena. Junior Erik Jaanimagi (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) kept the pressure on the Saints' defense with four shots on goal. Jaanimagi scored his first goal of the season with a dagger from the left side that fired past the goalkeeper and into the deepest corner of the net. The Saints found Jaanimagi to be a handful, as he also scored his first goal of the season against them last year. Outshooting the Saints 20-3 in the game, the Bulls charged into the second half after not finding the back of the net in the first half. Following Jaanimagi’s goal, sophomore Shyle Braithwaite (Brampton, Ontario/Philip Pocock Catholic) knocked in a header after being set up by juniors Sola Abolaji (Denver, CO/Eagle Crest) and Andrae Clark (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton). The assist was Abolaji’s first as a Bull. Sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) punched in the final goal of the afternoon on a one-timer set up by Clark on the left side. Clark’s two assists gives him a total of four, which leads the team.
"Defense Wins Championships" The UB flat-back foursome of senior Mbwana Johnson (San Fernando, Trinidad/Pleasantville), freshman Dan Gwyther (London, England/Woodcote), junior Dave Chojnowski (Rochester, NY/Hilton) and senior Matt Stuczynski (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) have anchored the team’s success so far with aggressive on-the-ball play and creative field vision that has shut out two of their four opponents this season. The opposing team’s inability to score so far has led to the Bulls’ 4-0-0 record in this young season. Junior goaltender Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) has faced 20 shots in four games and has a 0.75 GAA which is second in the Mid-American Conference. Up Next
The Bulls end their four-game homestand at a perfect 4-0-0 only to begin a four-game road trip that begins at St. Bonaventure Wednesday, Sept. 14. The team will have two days’ rest before traveling to Statesboro, Georgia to compete in the Georgia Southern Tournament on the weekend of September 17-18. They will face Centenary Saturday at 12 pm and Western Illinois Sunday at 12 pm. |
