Bulls Blank Marquette In Opening Day of Marquette Invitational Mike Unwin scores two goals for Buffalo MILWAUKEE, WI- The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team opened play at the Marquette Invitational tonight, shutting out host Marquette, 4-0. Mike Unwin (Basingstoke, England/North Iowa CC) scored two goals for the Bulls, while UB goalkeeper Nick Fetterman had six saves in net, earning his second shutout of the season.
The Bulls scored early in the game as Rich Wilson took a free kick pass from Steffen Thoresen at the 16 minute mark of the match. Wilson’s header shot got past the Golden Eagles goalkeeper to put the Bulls up by one. The UB defense was put to the test in the first half as Marquette outshout the Bulls 12-1. The Bulls relied heavily on Fetterman, who notched five saves to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless. The second half went in favor of Buffalo across the boards as the Bulls posted three more goals, while outshooting the Golden Eagles, 11-7. The second Buffalo goal came at the 56:57 mark with Dan Bulley setting up Unwin to fire from inside the top of the box. Casey Derkacz (Hamburg, NY/Penn State) had two quick chances with back-to-back shots in the 62nd minute, but settled for the assist as Lucas Bassan grabbed the rebound to score Buffalo’s third goal of the night. Unwin scored one more with less than four minutes remaining by connecting with Risto Latti (Hyuinkaa, Finland/Sueitsin Lukio) as he sent the ball diagonally across the field to perfectly set up Unwin for his second goal of the match and to ultimately seal the Buffalo win. Unwin had a team high four shots on the night.
Fetterman finished the game with six saves in net as Marquette outshot the Bulls 19-12. The Bulls will continue play on Sunday with a game against DePaul. The match is set for 12pm CT in Chicago, IL.
