The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team experienced a minor setback against Loyola-Chicago Friday night, letting up two second-half goals for its first road loss of the season, 2-1. The Bulls were beaten in the corner kick category, 5-0, but managed to put four shots on goal to the Ramblers’ six. Senior Sola Abolaji (Denver, Colorado/Eagle Crest) came off the bench to net the lone goal for UB. The goal was Abolaji’s first of the year, coming off a feed from junior Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) at the 73:34 mark. In his first start ever as a Bull, freshman goalkeeper Robert Shuttleworth (Tonawanda, NY/Nichols) provided a consistent presence, stopping four shots on goal. The Ramblers were led by true freshman Michael Ferguson, who scored the first two goals of his career.
The Bulls rebounded from Friday night’s defeat to pummel Valparaiso by a count of 5-1. UB scored three goals in the first half and never looked back. Senior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) led the Bulls with a massive offensive onslaught, netting three goals in the contest to end the Crusader’s three-game win streak and to end a three-game UB winless streak. Clarke converted on the first goal of the game at the 22nd minute, heading the ball past the Valpo goalkeeper off a corner kick from fellow senior Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). The senior forward locked in for his second goal eight minutes later, scoring on a shot deflected off a Crusader defender. Senior Braden Byler (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) then rifled in his second goal of the year, making the halftime tally 3-0. Junior Lee Catchpole netted his first goal at the 73rd minute, and Clarke would end the game with a penalty kick to seal the win. Clarke Delivers Hat Trick Andrae Clarke became the first UB baller to score a hat trick since UB’s all-time leading scorer, Steve Butcher, who performed the feat on Sept. 3, 1998. He also joined the national ranks, being second player in the nation to score a hat trick in Sunday’s 5-1 win. Notre Dame’s Joseph Lapira netted four goals against Indiana on Sept. 3. Clarke is tied for first in goals in the Mid-American Conference with three. Up Next
