Second Half Effort Boosts UB to 3-0 Win

Bulls defense allows only two shots on goal in shutout

BUFFALO, NY – The UB men's soccer team stitched together three goals on Sunday against Siena, once again taking advantage of key opportunities and wearing down their opponents after not scoring in the first half. The team's conditioning provided the strength needed to pitch their second shutout of the season and en route to their fourth straight win.

Junior Erik Jaanimagi (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta)

fired up the 200 plus in attendence by scoring the first goal of the game with precision. After a pass from freshman Dan Gwyther (London, England/Woodcote), Jaanimagi settled the ball off a deflection, only to lead a break away down the left side of field and releasing a shot to the lower right corner of the goal. This was Jaanimagi's first goal of the season, after battling a sickness earlier in the week.

Nine minutes later, at the 72:22 mark, the Bulls found their way back on the scoreboard with a header from sophomore Shyle Braithwaite (Brampton, Ontario/Philip Pocock Catholic). Braithwaite was set up by newcomer junior Sola Abolaji (Denver, CO/Eagle Crest) and junior Andrae Clark (Kingston, Jamaica/Dewitt Clinton).

The assist gave Abolaji his first point as a Bull. The goal gives Braithwaite seven points on the season, which surpasses his season-high of six last season.

The topping on the cake was scored off a one-timer from sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay). Clarke once again contributed to the goal, along with junior Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Catchpole, who had to battle through double teams all afternoon, managed to take three shots on goal, and extends his point streak to four games.

Siena was outshot by the Bulls 20-3, and were kept out of the net after scoring three goals in their previous game vs. Oneonta. Caio Silva and Ross Cardinell each had one shot on goal, but the lack of shots ultimately led to the Saints searching for an answer on offense. Junior goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) pitched his second shutout of the season after making two saves in limited chances. Saints goalkeeper Patrick Henry made five saves in the loss.

The Bulls end their homestand with a 4-0-0 record, a similar start to last season, where the team went 6-0-1 in their first seven games. The team travels to St. Bonaventure Wednesday, Sept. 14 before heading to Georgia for the Georgia Southern Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 17.
