UB Men's Soccer Wins Fall Classic

Astudillo Records 110th Victory; Surpasses Sal Esposito In Carreer Wins

BUFFALO, NY - Sophomore Dave Pidgeon's (Dorval, Quebec/Bishop Whelan) goal 9:06 into the game was all the offense the Bulls needed as they cruised to a 4-0 victory over Siena College in the final game of the 2001 Bulls Fall Classic. Buffalo was declared the tournament champion after winning both of its games over the weekend. The Bulls (3-1) defeated Central Connecticut State University, 1-0, on Saturday. Siena (1-2-1) finished the tournament 1-1 after scoring a 4-0 victory over Canisius in the first game of the tournament.

The Bulls victory also marked the 110th win for head coach John Astudillo. Astudillo, in his thirteenth season at UB, now becomes the winningest coach in UB men's soccer history, passing Sal Esposito, who guided the Bulls to 109 victories (105 losses) over 16 seasons (1973-1988).

Buffalo, winners of three-straight games, also received goals from junior Dan Wielechowski (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem), junior Mike Peplinski (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool), and freshman Jeff Gallusser (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta). Wielechowski hooked up with sophomore Patrick Beckley (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) at the 64:23 mark to give the Bulls a two-goal advantage before Peplinski scored on a penalty kick (82:28) and Gallusser tallied with 1:27 left to close out the scoring.

At the conclusion of the tournament UB senior Kevin Pitra (Solon, OH/Solon) was named the tournament's Defense MVP and Siena's Kevin Purcell (Albany, NY/Guilderland) was honored as the tournament's Offense MVP.

In the first match of the day, Central Connecticut State University defeated Canisius College, 4-0. Central Connecticut's Rohan Smith broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute before the Blue Devils tacked on three more goals to earn the win. Central Connecticut improved to 2-2 while Canisius dropped to 1-3 on the season. Buffalo will host Canisius on Wednesday, September 12, at 7 p.m.
