Bulls Drop First Game to UC Irvine

UB Gives Up Early Goal, Comeback Falls Short

IRVINE, CA - After giving up a goal in the first minute of play, the University at Buffalo men's soccer team had to play comeback the rest of the way and fell short, losing to UC Irvine 3-1 Friday evening.

Eric Monterastelli scored a goal for UCI off a header just 44 seconds into the game, putting the Bulls down 1-0 early in the action. The Anteaters added another goal before the half as Aaron Colacion connected with the back of the net at the 37:49 mark and a 2-0 UC Irvine lead at halftime.

The Bulls made a strong effort in the second half, and did so quickly. John Shannon (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored from outside the 18-yard box on an assist from Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) just three minutes into the second half, cutting the lead to one goal at 2-1. UC Irvine would add an insurance goal in the 58th minute for the 3-1 final score.

Starting goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) recorded six saves in 79 minutes of action but gave up the three goals. Adam Werth (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) played the final 11 minutes and gave up no goals.

UB (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season after opening the year with two straight wins. The Bulls will be in action again on Saturday afternoon when they will play Cal-State Fullerton at 1 pm ET.
