Bulls Drop Fall Invitational Opener

UB downed 2-0 by Bucknell; Robert Morris dumps Canisius, 4-1

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team dropped its home opener Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to visiting Bucknell in the first round of the 2002 Bulls Fall Invitational at RAC Field. In Saturday's earlier match, Robert Morris defeated Canisius 4-1.

The Bulls and Bison played to a scoreless first half, however Bucknell grabbed the lead at the 68 minute mark as Eric Brunton's dribbler got past UB goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) for the first goal of the match. Jonathan Hemmert picked up an assist on the goal. Bucknell put the game away at the 89:42 mark as Chris Beekman took a pass from Steve Feather and scored on a breakaway goal for the 2-0 decision.

UB (1-2) outshot Bucknell (3-0) 11-9 in the match. Wozniak stopped two Bucknell shots while Chris Vavrina (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) picked up one save and allowed a goal in the final 16 minutes of action. Adam Edwards earned the shutout for Bucknell recording six saves.

In the opening match, Robert Morris' Said Ali scored three goals to lift the Colonials (2-1) past Canisius (0-3) 4-1.

After Robert Morris took a 1-0 lead on a Rob Baskin goal at the 7:14 mark, Ali picked up his first of the match at the 20:00 mark to give the Colonials a 2-0 edge at halftime. Canisius' Justin Phillips cut the margin to 2-1 with a scoring strike after picking up the rebound of Kevin Silakowski's shot. Ali then closed the scoring for Robert Morris with goals at 66:58 and 75:25 to seal the win.

Sunday's matches will feature Canisius taking on Bucknell at 11:00 am and UB hosting Robert Morris in the concluding match at 1:00 pm. Both matches will be at UB's RAC Field.
