With a crowd of over 500 fans on hand, the University at Buffalo men’s soccer team were upended in the first home game of the season, falling to Detroit, 1-0, in the first game of the UB Fall Classic. The last time the Bulls started off a season with a record of 1-1-1 after the first three games was in 1997. The Bulls matched up well physically with the Titans, who were crowned Horizon League regular season champs in 2005. Both teams battled to a 0-0 draw heading into the 69th minute, when Detroit’s Mark Djurovski netted the lone goal of the match, driving the ball past UB goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) from 15 yards out. Although Buffalo outshot the Titans 12-8 in the game, Detroit capitalized on chances to shoot on net, winning the shot on goal differential 6-2, which included the game-winner.
In Sunday’s matchup with Detroit, the Canisius Golden Griffins scored the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining to seal the 3-2 win and the UB Fall Classic title. Despite losing the corner kick battle 8-4, Canisius managed to battle back against the Titans and earn its first victory of the season. All-Tournament Team Following the Canisius-Detroit game Sunday afternoon, the coaches named ten players to the UB Fall Classic All-Tournament team, for their stellar play in the weekend’s games. Buffalo named three players, senior goalkeeper Daniel Bell, senior Brian Knapp (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), and freshman Ville Wahlsten (Naantali, Finland/Naantali/Aurajoki), while Canisius defender Rudy Pikuzinski earned Defensive MVP honors and Detroit forward Mark Djurovski was honored as Offensive MVP.
The Bulls (1-1-1) look ahead to Friday where they will travel to take on Loyola-Chicago in the first of three straight road games. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. ?? |
