Weekly Release - Sept. 5UB Opens Season with a Win The Bulls opened the 2000 season with a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut State in the shortened CCSU Tournament. UB's Jay Page (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) scored the game-winning goal at the 4:20 mark off an assist from Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), giving the Bulls an early 1-0 lead. In the second half, Chris Vinci (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's) scored his first goal of the year off an assist from Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa). That goal came at the 62:07 mark and gave Buffalo the cushion it needed to hold on for the win.
Wozniak Records Shutout Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) played an outstanding game between the pipes in the season opener. Wozniak recorded a career-best 14 saves in the game in helping UB hold on for a 2-0 victory. Those 14 saves matched his career saves total going into the season. It was the first non-combined shutout for Wozniak in his career. He had two combined shutouts last season, playing one half in each of those games, but played the full 90 minutes this weekend against CCSU.
Opening Game Washed Out The Bulls' scheduled opener against Sacred Heart was washed out this past weekend. UB was scheduled to play Sacred Heart in the second game on Saturday, Septemeber 2, at the CCSU Tournament. Heavy rains in the area made the field unplayable and dangerous, forcing a stoppage of play in the first game of the day and forcing the cancellation of the Buffalo game. A makeup date for that game was not made.
UB to Host Conference Tournament The University at Buffalo will host the 2000 Mid-American Conference Men's Soccer Tournament this season. The tournament will feature quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with the final game being played at the highest remaining seed. The MAC has seven teams that participate in men's soccer, and all seven will be eligible. The tournament will take place from November 3-5.
Upcoming Action... The Bulls have a busy week coming up with three games in five days, and stretching clear across the country in terms of location. UB will play at cross-town rival Canisius on Wednesday, September 6, for a 7 pm start. Buffalo will then travel across the country to take part in the Cal-Irvine Tournament. UB will open up against the host Anteaters on Friday, September 8, at 6 pm ET. On Sunday, September 10, Buffalo will face Cal-State Fullerton at 1 pm ET. The first UB home game will be October 13, when the Bulls host Kentucky. Date Team Time/Result C. Conn.
