Bulls Hold On For 2-1 Victory

UB Edges Army In Lehigh-Army Men's Soccer Classic

BETHLEHEM, PA - Sophomore Dave Pidgeon (Dorval, QU/Bishop Whelan) and junior Jenton Esworthy (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) scored first-half goals as the University at Buffalo men's soccer team (1-1) held on for a 2-1 victory over the Army Black Knights (0-2) in the Lehigh-Army Soccer Classic at Lehigh's Ronald J. Ulrich Field on Sunday afternoon.

Pidgeon scored his first goal as a UB Bull 29 minutes into the game to give the Bulls the lead. Not to be outdone, Esworthy then tallied his first in a Buffalo uniform less than four minutes later when he took a pass from junior Mike Peplinski (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) and beat Army goalkeeper Tyler Donnell to give the Bulls a two-goal advantage.

The Black Knights did trim the deficit in the 70th minute when Mark Hillen feed Tucker Mahoney. However, the Bulls defense and junior goalkeeper Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) protected the one-goal lead for the final 19 minutes to preserve the victory. Wozniak, who played the entire game for the Bulls, finished with four saves on the day.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Buffalo senior midfielder Bill Norberg (Allison Park, PA/Shaler) and senior back Matt Yeates (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their strong play in the two-game tournament.

The Bulls will return home to open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, September 8, as they host the Bulls Fall Invitational. Canisius and Siena will kick off the Invitational at 11:30 a.m. before UB takes on Central Connecticut State at 2:30 p.m. On Sunday, Canisius will pair up with Central Connecticut State (11:30 a.m.), which will be followed by a Buffalo and Siena matchup (2:30 p.m.).
