Men's Soccer Drops Opener

Bulls fall to Lehigh in Lehigh-Army Soccer Classic

BETHLEHEM, PA The University at Buffalo men's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Saturday afternoon in the Lehigh-Army Soccer Classic at Ronald J. Ulrich Field.

Buffalo (0-1) trailed by only one goal at intermission before surrendering four goals in a six-and-a-half minute span early in the second half as Lehigh (1-0) handed Buffalo its first opening day loss in five years.

Lehigh's Kyle Hartman got the Mountain Hawks on the board early, scoring off a rebound on Evan Bruno's shot 16 minutes into the game. The Bulls held Lehigh scoreless for the next 33 minutes before Dan Perciballi scored on a pass from Hartman to give the Mountain Hawks a two-goal advantage. Buffalo couldn't recover and the Mountain Hawks scored on their next three shots to close out the scoring.

Sophomore Chris Vavrina (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) earned the start in goal for Buffalo and recorded four saves before he sustained an injury on Lehigh's third goal and was replaced by sophomore T.J. Borawski (Cheektowaga,NY/Canisius). Borawski played the final 37:11 and made one save.

The Mountain Hawks outshot the Bulls 16-5. Five yellow cards were also handed out as senior Matt Yeates (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's), sophomore Mike Geller (Gardiner, NY/New Paltz) and Wozniak were nailed with the infractions for Buffalo.

The Bulls will return to action on Sunday, September 2, when they battle Army at noon. Buffalo will then open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, September 8, as they host the Bulls Fall Invitational. Canisius and Siena will kick off the Invitational at 11:30 a.m. before the Bulls take on Central Connecticut State at 2:30 p.m. On Sunday, Canisius will pair up with Central Connecticut State (11:30 a.m.), which will be followed by a Buffalo and Siena matchup (2:30 p.m.).
