Bulls Drop Opener To Fairfield 1-0QUEENS, NY – The Buffalo men's soccer team lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Fairfield to open the season at the St. John's Nike Classic. Sam Bailey scored the game's lone goal in the 70th minute to give the Stags the victory. Three newcomers to the Bulls lineup started tonight's match, they were junior forward Dominic Oppong (Scarborough, Ontartio/Cardinal Newman/Cincinnati), sophomore midfielder Alex Marrello (Burnaby, British Columbia/Alpha Secondary/Cincinnati) and junior midfielder Eric Johnson (Cleveland, OH/West Geauga/Wright State). Also making their UB debuts as substitutes were Justin Fredsell (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), Jim Eichas (Rochester, NY/Hilton) and Juha Kaartuluoma (Pirkkala, Finland/Pirkkalan Yhteislunkio).
Sophomore goalkeeper Robert Shuttleworth (Tonawanda, NY/Nichols/Loyola-Maryland) started and played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Bulls, making two saves. The match was a tight affair that featured just 14 total shots, seven for each team, and just six corner kicks, with Fairfield holding the corner edge 4-2. There were also six yellow cards handed out during the match, including a double-yellow card ejection in the 89th minute to Steffen Thoresen (Trondheim, Norway/Kristen Tronderlag). The Bulls return to action on Sunday evening as the take on the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson at 6pm at St. John's University in Queens, NY. |
